About me

My name is Giorgia and I’m a birder and a photographer, a writer and a storyteller. My written work is largely aimed at telling stories of birding, nature and the beauty of being part of and experiencing it with the utmost respect for nature itself and its inhabitants.
I’m also passionate about the Arctic and the wildlife that populates it, I’m a sea ice lover, in awe of the ice and the cold.

Between 2020 and 2023 I focused mostly on nature and landscape photography. During that period, I also worked on the three-year photo book project Vysočina 101. I took 101 day trips from Brno to the Czech region called Vysočina (literally ‘Highlands’) and, as I walked routes and trails, I documented the beauty of its nature through the seasons.

Experiencing the Arctic on my first trip to Svalbard in 2023 flipped the switch of climate awareness in me and opened my eyes to the true scale of the climate crisis. It ignited a sense of urgency and purpose I’ve done my best to channel and cultivate since then, both through learning and by incorporating climate-related topics in my photos and writing.

That Svalbard trip also ‘inadvertently’ allowed birding into my life. Photographing the Arctic wildlife made me want to get better at photographing animals, so I started practising on birds in my backyard. Birding, however, quickly turned into a thing on its own, one that brought me even closer to nature in a way I’d never been before. Bird photography has been a major staple of my visual universe since then.

The Arctic, birding, nature, photography, climate, writing. These are the keywords that best describe my persona, that best sum up who I am and what I love.

About the website

I created this website as a ‘container’ for my photographic and writing work.

I’ve tried to keep the website structure as straightforward as possible. The section ‘Photos’ includes a selection of shots divided by the subjects I’m most passionate about and trying to improve at: birds, wildlife, nature, and landscape. I’ll also be adding the odd themed gallery about this or that trip or project, when especially meaningful.

The sections ‘Arctic’ and ‘Nature · Birding’ feature excerpts from my Vysočina 101 photo book and a number of written pieces inspired by trips I’ve been on, bird walks, and aspects of the climate crisis.

About the name and the logo

Wikipedia describes eiders as ‘large sea ducks [whose species] all breed in the cooler latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere’. Eiders populate the areas of the planet I, too, am most familiar with, and like to inhabit and travel to: the northern hemisphere, the cooler latitudes, the North.

That’s why I chose the eider duck as the imaginary symbol of this webpage. It’s what the pun in the page name is based on, and it’s what the logo itself represents. In fact, the logo reproduces exactly how one of my childhood friends taught me to draw ducks when we were kids. I’ve always been fond of ducks, and I never stopped drawing them as I used to, so I thought I’d keep doing it here.
